About the Raymond Williams Society
The Raymond Williams Society was established in 1989 with the aid of a capital sum generously donated by family, friends and admirers. The Society exists to support and develop intellectual and political projects in areas broadly connected with Williams's work.
Over the last decade we have organised Memorial Lectures delivered by Umberto Eco, Dorothy Thompson, Marina Warner, Stuart Hall, Edward Said, Terry Eagleton, Gwyn Williams and Noam Chomsky. We have supported or run a range of conferences, symposia and seminars concerned with education, culture, the media, drama, and the future of socialism. We have also produced Key Words: a Journal of Cultural Materialism.
If you consider an event you are organising to be consistent with the work of the Society, you may apply for us to sponsor your event.
We would now like to expand the membership of the society and to organise a range of new activities and events. In 2006 we held public talks and seminars in Nottingham, London, and Swansea, and supporting other events in association with the WEA and the Raymond Williams Memorial Fund. We also, in 2007, relaunched Key Words, the Society's academic journal.
Membership of the Raymond Williams Society costs £20 a year (£10 unwaged and students). New 2008 members will receive a free copy of Key Words issue 6, advance notification of all Society events, and will have the right to attend the Annual General Meeting, to vote, and to stand for the Management Committee. You can join online by clicking "membership of the Society" in the navigation bar on the left.
